A Sports Illustrated story on the worst Division 1 team in America. As I talked with the old folks about their recollections of the Depot and what kind of interactions they had there in the early 60’s, they basically saw the ushering in of the demise of the passenger service in 1968 and the slow forgetting of the Depot itself. That is until 1992 when SI, in doing their story on the Aggie Football team, set this photo up at the Alemeda Depot. And to dramatize the shot and the futility of NMSU Football dumped trash around the players and took the photo. Fitting homage to a dead icon of the city: unused and worn down. They (SI) skillfully used the depot as a doppelganger for the football squad; Both had once been vital and a powerhouse of sorts (at least on some level for this area) only to be forgotten and fall in disrepair leaving all traces of its vitality to peoples memories.
the end of the line
it was basically done in ’63.
no more like yesterday.
no matter how hard we wished
it was not that way.
Shirley told me about
the train to Rincon.
a dying out of sorts,
the last chance.
Cub Scouts all aboard
to experience what we knew.
to say they had too,
that out of style feeling.
To remain quiet yet present.
like the faded memory.
the beacon of bygone.
used less and less.
awakened for a joke in 92
embalmed and preserved in 07
a little slice of heaven
that reminds us when
today was then.
